HERE ARE 10 SIMPLE STEPS TOWARD HEALTH AND FREEDOM:
1. ADDICTION means that the substance, nicotine, is in control and you are not. Addictions manifest as urges, or the proverbial "nicotine fits". An urge seeking gratification will rise, peak and subside in 2 to 4 minutes. It is imperative to fend off these urges for this brief period of time. To cave in means that the cigarette is now having you. Urges will become less and less intense, much fewer and much farther between as the days pass.
2. FIGHT BACK! You fend off the urges with the use of a counter-thought. Counter-thoughts are defined as an "in-your-face" remembrance of the goal, a strong positive affirmation, a crucial bit of information. In other words a "snap-out-of-it" cold dose of logic to regain your concentration, your mental focus, and thus fend off the addictive urge.
3. REPROGRAM! Through learning we program our brains to respond to the signals we send it. We can also re-program using this simple counter-thought technique. The object of the focus card is to empower the one under the siege of addictive urges. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUIT `EM IS A 6 WEEK, DAY BY DAY, HOUR BY HOUR, IN-DEPTH SYSTEM OF READY MADE COUNTER-THOUGHTS KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! There are 53 colorful Focus Cards in the QUIT 'EM deck. 45 daily counter-thought cards in blue. 5 milestone cards in green. 1 beginning and 2 ending cards in red. 104 sides of text containing important tobacco related education. Positive affirmations because the mental focus must remain on the goal. Practical advice to help deal with nicotine withdrawal. Wry humor to counter those illogical rationalizations that often accompany nicotine fits. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. MAKE UP YOUR MIND! The first red card in the deck is titled "Decision Time". Nothing happens until the smoker decides. The card states in part: "The decision to stop smoking must be stronger than my desire to continue smoking." This conscious "want to" is the key to success in any endeavor. This is especially true of any type of behavior modification. To change the behavior - first change the mind. Simply put - to succeed you must "want to".
5. DAY ONE! On the morning of the actual stop date, the first blue card, 1a, should be on top of the deck. During the day when the urge to smoke strikes, (a nicotine fit) it should be met immediately by a firm and determined "NO!" This can be expressed internally or aloud, but do it with conviction. The focus card should be retrieved from pocket or purse, instead of a cigarette. It is your ready made counter-thought.
6. IT'S A SYSTEM! Read side 1a, take 3 deep breaths. (Inhale as if smoking) Allow the pure oxygen experience to calm the physical craving and relax the nervous system.
7. USE IT! Read side 1b, take 3 more deep breaths. Pause a moment, let the message on the card sink into the consciousness. This is how you regain concentration and put the mind in control. Remember - withdrawal is the first stage of healing. The nicotine fits cannot kill you and they are in fact quite fleeting.
8. TAKE BACK CONTROL! Throughout the day, when the urge to reach for a smoke strikes, you will find yourself in varying degrees of conflict. This is because your new behavior - not smoking - and your old addicted behavior - are out of accord. Instead, reach for the daily Focus Card and end this conflict. It is the wake up call needed to keep you on track toward health and freedom, but it can only work if you use the counter-thought card. The deep breathing is essential. Be sure to do it.
9. MENTAL PUSH-UPS! Reading the same card several times in the same day is perfectly okay. Repetition is the basis of programmed learning. Tomorrow is another day - another card - another lesson.
10. ONE DAY AT A TIME! Day 2 means that card 2 is utilized. Day 3, card 3 etc.... When a green card is reached (on day 9, 18, 27,36 and 45) read it and smile. It is the pat-on-the-back, congratulations you have earned for the milestone reached - as well as the encouragement to keep going. To break the nicotine habit requires effort and discipline. QUIT 'EM helps to maintain both by being with the individual all day everyday. This is its uniqueness. QUIT 'EM is a carefully laid out program. If used as directed it will gently and effectively guide the smoker from day 1 to day 45. A PERSON WHO CAN GO SIX WEEKS WITHOUT A CIGARETTE CAN GO A LIFETIME! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BE CREATIVE! The systematic, follow the numbers type of approach is an excellent way to achieve the goal. However, all the counter-thought cards are considered tools to fight off the destructive urges and can thus be used randomly as well as sequentially. Be creative. Feel free to pull any card from the deck at any time. This method can add an element of surprise to the program, It's more spontaneous - more fun. BE SELECTIVE! Some smokers like to select a number of cards from the deck. The ones they feel apply to them on a more personal level. Everyone can find favorites and can elect to carry just those. The counter-thoughts ensure the smoker regains focus and concentration when under the siege of nicotine fits. They are the arrows of truth launched into the consciousness that make the "change of mind" possible. Now both mind and body are engaged in the healing process. THE KEY IS TO USE THEM! Carry one card, several cards, carry the whole deck. Spread them out and read them, memorize them, play with them. Post them around the living and working environment as "in-your-face" reminders. Attach them to the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror, the visor in your car, your desk, phone, computer. Wherever you will see them and whenever they will help you remain centered and focused. However you elect to use the cards, it is imperative that you bear in mind that the object of the cards is to educate in the long run, and in the short run to give you something to actively do with your hands as well as something else to think about besides how badly "you think" you need a cigarette. The struggle is between the true and the false and the truth is: you don't really "need" that cigarette. The system offered here is as simple as one, two, three. One, articulate a determined, emotional, "NO". Two, pull the counter-thought, which should be at your fingertips, and read it. Three, actually do the deep breathing. Remember, withdrawal is really the beginning of the healing process. QUIT `EM IS A POCKET SIZED COACH-IN-A-BOX THAT IS WITH YOU WHEN NO OTHER PROGRAM CAN BE. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not easy for some because some believe it simply has to be hard and complicated. Some still seek for the magic pill or potion that will fix it instantly and effortlessly. Others want to string out the process for years. To be successful now and forever you must make up your mind and then you must diffuse those nicotine fits. YOU CANNOT BE TOTALLY COMMITTED - SOMETIMES! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most smokers know they "probably should" Quit `Em. When that notion finally translates into action, this simple system of counter-thoughts and breath work is a worthy addition to any stop smoking method you choose to try. If done faithfully and correctly it could be the only method you will ever need. I challenge you to try it. IT'S GETTING CLOSE TO DECISION TIME AND THE QUESTION WILL NOT GO AWAY IF NOT NOW - WHEN? A smoker who is motivated to quit has limited choices for help. Most of the products and programs available attack withdrawal symptoms on a physical level only.
